Before you start reading Law of Success lessons, you need to know a little about the history of the course. You must know exactly what is promised to those following the course unless they absorb the laws and principles upon which the course is based. You need to know its limitations as well as its possibilities to help you in your fight for a place in the world.

From an entertainment perspective, the Law of Success course will be second to none of the monthly magazines that can be found on newsstands.

Overview

This course is designed for the serious minded person who spends at least a part of his time in business to succeed in life. I do not intend to compete with those who write purely for entertainment purposes.

My aim in creating this course is twofold: first, to help you discover your weaknesses and second, to help you formulate a specific plan to overcome those weaknesses.

The most notable of these weaknesses that stand between men and women and success are intolerance, greed, envy, suspicion, revenge, arrogance, conceit, the tendency to reap what is not sown, and the habit of spending more than we earn.

All these common enemies of mankind, and many more not mentioned here, are included in the Law of Success in such a way that any man of reasonable intelligence can master them with little effort or inconvenience.

You should know at the outset that this course has long since passed the experimental stage; He already has a track record of accomplishments that deserve serious reflection and analysis. You should also know that the Law of Success has been tested and supported by some of the most practical minds of modern times.

Terminology

In this introductory lesson you will observe some technical terms that may not be clear to you. Don’t let this bother you. Don’t try reading first to understand these terms. They will become clear to you after you read the rest of the syllabus. This entire introductory chapter is, of course, background to the other sixteen chapters, and you should read it as such. You should read this chapter several times, because with each reading you will get a thought or idea that you did not get in the previous reading.

In this introduction you will find a description of a newly discovered law of psychology that is the foundation of all great personal achievement. I refer to this as the master mind, i.e. the mind that develops from the harmonious cooperation of two or more people who collaborate with themselves for the purpose of accomplishing a task.

If you are involved in the sales business, you can take advantage of this Law of Master Mind in your daily work. It has been found that a group of six or seven salespeople can use the law so effectively that their sales can increase incredibly.

Selling life insurance is thought to be the hardest thing on earth, which shouldn’t be true with an established necessity like life insurance, but it is. Nevertheless, a small group of men working for the Prudential Life Insurance Company, which sold mostly small policies, formed a small friendship group for the purpose of experimenting with the Law of the Master Mind, with the result that each person in the group wrote. In the first three months of the experiment, he wrote more insurance than he had written in the previous year.

What can be accomplished with this principle by any small group of intelligent salespeople who have learned how to apply the Law of the Master Mind will blow the imagination of the most optimistic and imaginative person.

Keep this in mind as you read this first chapter of Law and Success, and it’s not unreasonable to expect that this chapter will give you enough understanding of the act to change the entire course of your life.

Personalities

It is the personalities behind the business that determine the measure of business success. Improve those personalities so that they are more pleasant and more attractive to the patrons of the business and the business thrives. In any of the great cities of the United States merchandise of the same nature and price may be found in many stores, yet you will find that there is always one excellent store which does more business than any other. This is because there is someone behind the shop who pays close attention to the personalities of the people they come in contact with. The question is whether people buy personalities as much as merchandise, and are not more influenced by the personalities they come in contact with.

Service

Life insurance has been reduced to such a scientific basis that the cost of insurance does not vary to any great extent, regardless of the company, yet of the hundreds of companies doing life insurance business less than a dozen do large business in the United States.

Why Personalities! Ninety-nine out of every hundred people who buy a life insurance policy don’t know what’s in their policy and, more shockingly, don’t care. What they really buy is the pleasing personality of some man or woman who knows the value of cultivating such a personality.

Your business in life, or at least the most important part of it, is to achieve success. Success, in the sense of the word covered by this course on the Laws of Success, is “the achievement of your definite chief aim without infringing upon the rights of others:’ whatever may be your chief aim in life, after you have learned how to cultivate a pleasant personality and to get along with others in a given undertaking without friction or envy. Get it with very little effort after learning the delicate art of relationship building.

One of the greatest problems in life, if not the greatest, is learning the art of harmonious negotiation with others. This course is designed to teach people how to negotiate their lives in harmony and peace, free from the destructive effects of discord and friction that cause misery, want and failure to millions of people every year.
